Woody Mann: March 8 -10 2008

"This is one of those names that should be uttered only in hushed tones. Not only was he taught by the peerless guitar picker the Rev Gary Davis, but Mann has played with Son House, Bukka White and John Fahey and has studied jazz under the great Lennie Tristano. In between he has also managed to cut some dazzling music...don't miss a chance to see him; you are unlikely to hear anything - or anyone – better in the fields that Mann has chosen to master."

- The
London Times

Participants:

There will be no more than 12 participants; the level will be adapted to the composition of the group.

Venue:

The workshops will be held at:

Café Hein

7, an den Aessen

L-5418 Ehnen

Luxembourg

Ehnen is a small village on the Moselle river about 20 minutes’ drive from Luxembourg city or half an hour from Trier. For exact details, go to http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/mapPerformPage?strLocation=Ehnen&strCountry=eur&google=1

If you come by car, please do not park outside the Café. There is plenty of parking space down on the Moselle.

What to bring:

At least one guitar; spare strings; a tuner; and most importantly, peace of mind. A (sound) recording device is also a good idea. No video recordings, please.

The Café Hein is my private house so you can leave all your stuff there during the breaks and over night and it will be quite safe.

Somewhere to stay:

If you are looking for accommodation:

There are two comfortable hotels in Ehnen, literally a stone’s throw from the venue:

Hotel Bamberg and Hotel Simmer. Prices for these are about €90 for a double room with breakfast. For details see:

http://www.ont.lu/site_cityhebe-fr-61.html

A cheaper option is the Hotel Carrozza hotel in Wormeldange (a nearby village – 20 minutes on foot, 3 minutes by car) with double rooms plus breakfast for €70.

And there is the Hotel Moselblick just over the river in Germany, of which I have had very good reports. Prices are €60-80 for a double room with breakfast. This is a 40 minute walk from Ehnen (five minutes by car). Their website is http://www.moselblick.de/

For some really cheap options, go to the Trier website www.trier.de and look for accommodation under Saar/Obermosel. But you will need a car for all of these.

Food & drink:

I shall offer a welcome drink and nibbles on the Friday evening but otherwise you will need to make your own arrangements (see below for details of restaurants nearby).

Drinks during the workshop: You are welcome to bring your own and there will be (free) tea or coffee available on demand.

Food: Ehnen boasts two fairly modest establishments, where I would suggest we could all eat lunch on Saturday and Sunday. One is the village pub and the other is a Chinese restaurant where you can eat well for under €20.

If you want something more expensive, there is a range of restaurants in the area and I can recommend plenty when you are here.

Language:

The instruction will be in (readily comprehensible) English.
